Product Description
The Spyderco COBOL C273TIP is a distinctive non-locking folding knife designed by Paul Alexander, combining futuristic styling with elements inspired by traditional Japanese blades. Made in Italy, the COBOL features precision-machined titanium construction and a high-performance M390 particle-metallurgy blade.
Its 3.63-inch upswept blade is a dramatic hybrid of a traditional Japanese tanto and an Americanized tanto. The blade uses a saber grind that transitions into a flat grind at the faceted tip, giving the COBOL a distinctive appearance and versatile cutting geometry.
Instead of a conventional lock, the COBOL uses Spyderco's Ball Joint Non-Locking Mechanism. Precision-machined titanium scales incorporate integral spring arms and ball bearings that index into holes in the blade when opened. An extended tail on the blade allows it to be opened one-handed in a manner reminiscent of a traditional straight razor.

Our Take: The COBOL is definitely not your typical Spyderco. Its Italian-made titanium construction, M390 blade, and unusual Ball Joint mechanism make it one of the more interesting designs in the Spyderco lineup. The modified tanto blade and extended opening tab give it a distinctive straight-razor-inspired character, while the generous choil provides a surprisingly secure grip for a non-locking folder.

Making knives that consistently deliver reliable high-performance requires an ongoing commitment to testing. In our million-dollar testing facility we examine edge retention with a CATRA machine, look for rust development with Q-FOG, check the force needed to open and close a knife. We also repeatedly test for stress, wear, optimal heat-treating and actively search for higher quality, performance enhancing steels and materials.
